3 Things to Do in the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Area This Spring

ThinkDunes|April 23rd, 2019

Headed to Silver Lake this spring? Though often overlooked, spring is the perfect season to visit the Dunes and the surrounding communities of Hart and Mears.

There’s so much to do, yet lines are shorter, beaches are less crowded, and the weather is cool and breezy instead of the sweltering hot as it can be in summer.

From the beauty and majesty of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes to local attractions and quaint shopping, be sure to put these “to-dos” on your schedule this spring!

1. Enjoy the first signs of spring in West Michigan.

Parks and trails are plentiful in Oceana County. From the shores of Lake Michigan, inland to the hills and forests, there’s always a new corner of nature to explore and discover.

Not only is Oceana County home to one of the most prized paved trails in the entire state (the Hart-Montague Bike Trail, clocking in at a whopping 22 miles of paved trail heaven), but we’re also in a place where lush woods, far-reaching fields, and gently rushing streams and rivers flourish. The area is teeming with burgeoning nature, and there’s no better time to see it come to life than in the spring.

Watch wildlife come out of their winter hiding places, see the growth of brand-new flowers and plants, and even take part in one of our region’s most highly-anticipated pastimes (only possible in spring): Morel mushroom hunting. Delicious when sautéed in butter or fried, morels are a delicacy of the Midwest, especially. Instead of paying big bucks at the store for them, however, you can find your own right here in West Michigan. Just make sure you know what to look for.

No matter what your outdoor plans are, if you want to choose the trail or park that’s ideal for your excursion, head to our Parks & Trails page.

2. Chilly weather? Hit the shops!

With close proximity to Lake Michigan, it’s not uncommon for a few chilly days to hang around each spring as well. Fortunately, there’s still plenty of fun to be had!

We recommend taking a trip into downtown Hart — where unique shopping and restaurants abound. Find an array of gifts and accessories, fine furniture, and even vintage steals.

Once you’ve shopped till you’ve dropped, enjoy an authentic Mexican meal at La Fiesta or La Probadita. Or, get a tasty pie or two from Hart Pizza.

For more information, check our Specialty Shopping & Services and Food & Drink pages. You can filter your results by season to see what’ll be open during your visit.

3. Spend time on the uncrowded Dunes.

No list of Silver Lake to-dos would be complete without the Dunes. Opened April 1st, the Silver Lake Sand Dunes boast the most this area has to offer — from hiking trails and a sandy beach to rolling sand hills that are perfect for a wild ride on your ORV.

Spring is the ideal time to visit the great sand mountains as summer visitors haven’t yet flocked to the scene and the Dunes are far less crowded. You can enjoy the peace and cooler weather while experiencing the splendor of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes on your own terms.

Are you ready for your Silver Lake Sand Dunes area getaway to begin? Don’t wait — start planning your trip today!
