Celebrate Independence Day with Thunder Over the Dunes, one of West Michigan's most spectacular fireworks displays! This annual 4th of July tradition features a breathtaking show set against the stunning backdrop of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes.

Watch as vibrant fireworks light up the night sky over Lake Michigan, creating reflections on the water and illuminating 2,000 acres of sand dunes. The show typically begins at 10:30 PM or as soon as darkness falls, lasting approximately 30 minutes of non-stop pyrotechnic artistry.

This beloved community event is made possible by the Silver Lake Sand Dunes and Hart Area Chamber of Commerce, along with generous support from local businesses and sponsors. Thousands of visitors and residents gather each year to experience this unforgettable display.

Where's the best place to watch the fireworks?

The beach at Silver Lake State Park offers excellent views. You can also watch from the dunes or from boats on Silver Lake. Arrive early to secure your spot, as popular viewing areas fill up quickly.

Is there an admission fee?

The fireworks show is free to attend. However, if you’re parking at Silver Lake State Park, you’ll need a valid Michigan Recreation Passport or pay the daily entry fee.

What time should we arrive?

We recommend arriving by 8:00-9:00 PM to find parking and set up your viewing spot. The show starts at dusk, typically around 10:30 PM.

Can I bring chairs and blankets?

Yes! Bring beach chairs, blankets, and anything you need to be comfortable. Many families set up picnic areas for the evening.

Are there food and beverage options?

We recommend bringing your own snacks and drinks or stop by nearby restaurants and stores in Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Mears, and Hart are all open earlier in the day.
