Opening Day of the Silver Lake State Park ORV Area

Opening Day marks the start of another exciting season at the Silver Lake State Park ORV Area, one of Michigan's premier off-road destinations! After the winter break, dune enthusiasts gather to ride 2,000 acres of sand dunes along Lake Michigan.

Whether you're bringing your own ORV, ATV, dune buggy, or dirt bike, Opening Day is your first chance of the year to experience the thrill of riding Michigan's iconic sand dunes. Many riders make Opening Day an annual tradition, reuniting with fellow off-road enthusiasts to celebrate the season ahead.

The park can be busy on Opening Day and throughout opening weekend, so arrive early to secure parking and make the most of your day on the dunes.

Season Hours

Silver Lake State Park ORV area is open April 1 - October 31 each year.

• April 1 - April 30 (9:00 AM - 8:00 PM)
• May 1 - September 15 (9:00 AM - 10:00 PM)
• September 16 - October 31 (9:00 AM - 8:00 PM)

Please note: Access to the ORV area and dunes is stopped 30 minutes before closing time each evening.

Entry Requirements

All motor vehicles entering the Silver Lake State Park ORV area must display:

• Recreation Passport (Michigan resident or non-resident)
• Michigan ORV license and trail permit
• Parking lot vouchers (Required on summer weekends and holidays)

Permits can be purchased at the park entrance or online through the Michigan DNR website. Purchase permits in advance to save time on Opening Day.
