NorthStar Clean Energy
NorthStar Clean Energy, a subsidiary of CMS Energy, provides innovative energy and decarbonization solutions to commercial, industrial, municipal, and institutional clients. By working collaboratively with customers, NorthStar helps reduce emissions while delivering reliable energy solutions that support their operational needs.
NorthStar is developing the Hart Solar project, which is expected to provide 100 megawatts (MWAC) of solar generating capacity. Hart Solar will serve municipal, cooperative, commercial, and industrial choice customers, particularly those within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market. The project will offer a combination of energy, capacity, and renewable energy credits (RECs) to help customers meet their sustainability and energy goals.
Beyond its environmental benefits, Hart Solar is expected to have a significant positive economic impact on the region. The development is projected to create more than 100 construction jobs in central Michigan, generate over $20 million in regional economic activity during construction, and provide ongoing landowner lease payments and local tax revenue throughout the life of the project.
The solar facility will also contribute to substantial reductions in air pollutant emissions, water consumption, and wastewater discharge compared to traditional energy generation sources. In addition, NorthStar Clean Energy plans to incorporate agricultural and sustainability initiatives into the project, including opportunities for animal grazing and the establishment of bee and butterfly habitats that support local ecosystems.
