Peak fall foliage season is upon us, and the Silver Lake area is aglow with shades of gold, red, orange, and yellow. Start planning your autumn getaway today!

You’re Not Too Late — Now’s the Perfect Time to Enjoy Peak Fall Foliage in Silver Lake

According to the Detroit Free Press, now (roughly mid-October) is the best time to see the fall colors throughout the Lower Peninsula. Of course, the leaves will still be rounding out their transformation through the rest of the month. But if you’re planning a trip to Silver Lake, be sure to make your reservations now so you can get a peek of their best and boldest hues.

Beyond leaf peeping, there’s plenty more to do while you’re in town as well. Visitors come from all around Michigan and the country to enjoy the beauty of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes and the surrounding area. While you’re here and the colorful foliage is in full force, don’t miss these fun fall activities!

Top Things to Do on Your Fall Trip to Silver Lake

1. Spend a day on the dunes.

Whether by foot or by buggy, you can’t visit Silver Lake without heading out on the dunes at least once. Now is an ideal time to visit as the season is winding down, and the dunes tend to be far less busy as a result.

Remember that the Silver Lake State Park ORV Area & Campground will be closed after October 31st, so make your plans now before it’s too late!

 2. Visit Little Sable Point Lighthouse.

Though the lighthouse is currently closed for tours, that doesn’t mean you can’t take in the views of its gorgeous exterior against the backdrop of the Lake Michigan coastline. Little Point Sable Lighthouse is situated right on the sandy beach of Lake Michigan, and there are few other scenes more beautiful than its curved red brick against the water and trees.

 3. Start livin’ that farmers’ market, apple-pickin’, pumpkin-chuckin’ orchard life.

Anyone who’s visited Silver Lake in the fall knows you can’t go more than a few miles without witnessing breathtaking views of apple orchards, pumpkin patches, farmers’ markets, or all of the above.

Be sure to snag some pictures of you at one of the many farmers’ markets in the area, and enjoy seasonal treats like apple cider, pumpkin pie, donuts, and more.

4. Stretch your legs on the Hart-Montague Bike Trail.

The Hart-Montague Bike Trail runs north-south between Hart and Montague for 22.5 miles. Formerly the path of a railroad, the trail is now paved and well-maintained year-round.

Its gentle hills and lovely landscapes make it ideal for a fall bike ride or a brisk hike. Picnic tables and benches along the way offer perfect places to stop for lunch or a quick snack while you take in the views.

5. Indulge in a little retail therapy — and lunch!

While a bike ride on the Hart-Montague trail is always fun, no one said shopping can’t be a form of cardio too, right? Start by perusing the shops of downtown Hart, and don’t forget to take a gander at those still open in Silver Lake as well.

Get a little retail therapy in, then set your sights on lunch. Looking for restaurant recommendations? Check out our Food & Drink page for the best places to dine in or take out.

Make It a Weekend Getaway!

While day trips are always a good idea, why not stretch your visit to Silver Lake and make it a getaway? Perhaps a romantic weekend with your sweetheart or a fun fall escape with the kids!

Now’s the ideal time to book as the season is winding down, and prices are often at their lowest. Stay at a local hotel or resort, or camp at one of the area campgrounds that are still taking reservations. Our lodgings page can help you find the perfect place.

Happy fall to all & we hope to see you soon in Silver Lake!
