From Atop the Dunes: Jeep Invasion II Getting Crazy Huge

Jeep InvasionIf you missed it last year, don’t worry. Silver Lake Sand Dunes Jeep Invasion II will be even bigger.

Organizers of the second annual Jeep Invasion along the shore of Lake Michigan hope to attract 1,000 jeeps to Silver Lake Sand Dunes for a June 2-4 meetup, and they’re well on their way with another week to go before pre-registration ends.

“This year’s going to be a killer year,” said Chad Dumont, general manager of B&L Motorsports, which is one of the sponsors. “It’s just been absolutely crazy how many people have shown interest in it. They’re from all over – Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario, Canada.”

About 700 jeeps showed up for a humongous inaugural invasion last year. The headquarters for this year’s invasion again will be Golden Sands Golf Course & Bucket Bar, 2501 Wilson Rd. in Mears.

Here’s what’s on the schedule:

*5-10 p.m. Friday June 2 – jeep show with live music, kids games and a free hot dog dinner at Golden Sands

*8-9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3 – Parade lineup at Golden Sands to make sure everybody’s jeep is dune ready. At 10 a.m. the convoy of jeeps will drive through downtown Silver Lake and up into the dunes for a group photo and all-day dune riding.

*6-9 p.m. Saturday, June 3 – Music, kids games and dinner at Golden Sands with an award show for People’s Choice, Best Stock, Best Mod and Best Classic jeeps

*9-11 p.m. Saturday, June 3 – Fireworks over the pond at Golden Sands!

*noon Sunday, June 4 – Blessing of the Duners at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes ORV Area

Pre-register here by Friday, May 19 to get a swag bag and order T-shirts. It costs $5 per jeep.

“It’s a bunch of jeeps that get together and check each other’s vehicles out,” Dumont said. “To walk around on the dunes and look at 700, 800, 900 jeeps all parked in one spot is pretty spectacular.

“It’s just amazing to see what people have done to their jeeps. I’m sure there’s going to be some pretty killer vehicles there.”

Not to mention a lot of fun driving the dunes.
